Vedic Astrology: Calculation of Vimshottari Dasa
Predicting an event is a twofold activity. One involves prediction of an event and other is timing of an event. The timing of an event is a hard nut to crack. It is in fact more difficult than predicting an event. However it is the most important part of the prediction.
The
timing of an event involves different methods like transit, progressions and
dasa system. The most accurate out of it is the dasa system. The word 'Dasa'
means phase or state. The dasa systems are divided into two types 'Graha
dasa' and 'Rasi dasa'. In rasi dasa the periods are owned by a
different signs where are in Graha dasa periods are owned by different planets.
Classical writers have given around 52 dasa systems in Vedic Astrology. But the
most common among them is 'Vimshottari Dasa'. Vimshottari dasa is a type
of graha dasa. It is our experience that this dasa gives satisfactory results.
In
case of vimshottari dasa total life of human being is considered as 120 years.
The period of 120 years is divided among 9 planets including Rahu and Ketu. You
may raise the doubt that why 120 years only when there are some persons who
live beyond 120 years? The reason is that there are some special combinations
which prevail over common combination. In such cases the cycle of 120 years is
repeated.
The
sequence of dasa is fixed in every horoscope. But the dasa at birth is
different for every native. The dasa at birth depends on the constellation in
which the moon is located. Following table shows the birth constellation of
moon and dasa at birth.

It is very difficult to state the reason behind the number of years allocated to every planet. But in actual practice it gives accurate results. The planets specified in the above table are called as the owners of a particular constellation. e.g. Sun is the owner of Kruttika, Uttara and Uttarashadha. The dasa or period of any planet is subdivided called as antardasa or sub period. That is why every dasa is divided into 9 parts owned by the nine planets. The first sub period of every dasa is always owned by the lord of the major dasa. e.g. The first sub period of the dasa of Sun is owned by sun only and then others follow in sequential order. e.g. Afer the sub period of sun the sub period of moon will follow and after that the sub periods of all other planets in sequence will follow. The duration of the sub period is in proportion to the period of that planet in the cycle of 120 years. For instance the duration of sun dasa is 6 years in 120 years so the duration of the sub period of sun in Jupiter's dasa is 9 months 18 days and in Moon's dasa is 6 months. We have given the tables of the sub periods in the dasa of the every planet.

There
is also an alternative method for calculating the sub-period. Multiply the
number of years allocated to lord main dasa lord by the years allocated to the
sub-lord in question. Multiply the digit in the units place by 3. The number in
the Ten's and Hundred's place denotes months while the number in the units
place multiplied by 3 denotes days. e.g. if we want to calculate the Saturn's
sub period in Jupiter dasa. Multiply by 19 (Saturn's sub-period) to 16
(Jupiter's main dasa period) the result is 304. Multiply 4 by 3. 12 is the
result. 3 & 0 are the numbers in the Ten's & Hundred's place. So the
number becomes 30 months and 12 days for the Saturn's sub period in Jupiter's.
Thus Saturn's sub-period in the Jupiter's dasa is 2 years 6 months and 12 days.
The same holds true for Jupiter's sub period in Saturn's dasa.
The
duration of the dasa at birth is proportional to the traverse of moon in a
particular constellation. For instance, moon is in krittika and traversed half
of the constellation, the dasa of sun at birth will be half of the total
duration i.e. The sun dasa at birth will be only 3 years and the dasa of moon
will follow it.
The next question
would be in case of the dasa of birth how the sub periods are calculated. The
answer is sub period at birth will be the sub period which would be after 3
years in sun dasa i.e. of Saturn and all other sub periods after that follow in
the same order. The dasa passed before birth is called as 'bhukta' dasa
and the dasa which comes after the birth is called as 'bhogya' dasa. The
sum of bhukta and bhogya dasa is always equal to the total
duration of the planet's dasa.
Let
us caculate the bhukta and bhogya period at 1st July 2001 at 6.00 PM
The position of moon is Libra 28 deg
12 min. So the constellation is Vishakha. If we see table 1 then dasa at birth
is of Jupiter. Total duration of Jupiter's dasa is 16 years. If you refer to
our lecture 4 Vishakha starts at 20th degree of
Libra. So moon has passed
28
deg 12 min - 20 deg 00 min = 8 deg 12 min in Vishakha
We
will have to calculate by the law of three how much is bhukta and how much is
bhogya
For
13 deg 20 min 16 Years
Then
For 08 deg 12 min ?
The result is 9 years
10 months and 1 day is the bhukta (passed) at birth, and 6 years 1 month and 29
days is bhogya (to be passed). This means that the Jupiter has already started
9 years 10 months and 1 day before the birth date. i.e. It started on August 8th, 1991 and
it will end on August 7th , 2001 so if we add the duration of all the sub periods up to
July 1,2001 Venus sub period (bhukti) is on & passing it ends on March 12,
2002. and Sun's sub period follow after that. The following table demonstrates
this. In following table we have also shown all the dasas and their sub
periods.

The
sub periods are further subdivided into minute divisions called antaras
or inter periods. This division goes on till swara or the time taken for one
inhale and exhale. But for all practical purposes we can go till antaras. The
duration of antara is calculated in the same manner as sub-period is
calculated.
Let
us calculate Venus antara in moon sub period of saturn dasa.
The
duration of moon sub period in Saturn dasa is 19 months
So
the duration of venus antara is = 19 * 20/120 = 19/6 months = 3 months 5 days.
Like
this you can calculate for all the sub periods. The results of the periods will
be discussed later in the course.
Exercise:
Calculate the dasa bhuktis and antaras for your horoscope.
